Adopt a Park - Donald Mackay Park

Donald Mackay Park

A partnership between Fortress, City of Johannesburg and various community groups saw this park getting a much-needed facelift with the installation of the soccer field, basketball court, painting of murals, landscaping, a community vegetable garden to prevent illegal dumping, rampant crime and grime in public open spaces.

Donald Mackay Park, in Berea, stands as one of Johannesburg’s historic gems established in 1896. This park features multiple levels and stunning stone walls, reflecting its rich heritage. However, in recent years, it has faced neglect. In collaboration with Fortress REIT and several other organisations, Jozi My Jozi is on a journey of transforming the park to restore its historic charm.

Key upgrades have already been completed, including improvements on the thriving community food garden, equipped with an irrigation system and protective fencing. Other improvements include indigenous landscaping, vibrant murals, and improved sports facilities—such as a renovated basketball court and playgrounds.

Once neglected, the park is now a hub for community engagement and renewal. The completion of Phase 1 in December paved a way for the launch of Phase 2 in 2025. Watch the space!
